Neck Lift (Neck Rejuvenation)
The neck area can sag, wrinkle, and accumulate fat over time due to aging, gravity, and weight fluctuations. This often causes a lack of definition under the chin and along the neck line, making a person appear older than they are. Neck rejuvenation procedures involve removing excess fat, repairing weakened muscles, and tightening sagging skin in this area.
Neck lift surgery is a long-lasting surgical method generally preferred by patients over 40 years old. In younger patients with only fat accumulation, liposuction may suffice, while mild sagging can be treated with thread lifting. When skin elasticity is reduced and muscle structure is compromised, the classic neck lift surgery is performed. This procedure is sometimes combined with a facelift.
The surgeon makes incisions in inconspicuous areas such as in front of and behind the ears, removes excess skin, repairs muscles, and if necessary, supports the jawline with fillers or implants. The surgery takes about 1.5–2 hours under general anesthesia. Liposuction and thread lifting can be done under local anesthesia, often allowing same-day discharge. A one-day hospital stay is usually recommended after surgical neck lift.
During recovery, swelling and bruising decrease within the first week. Bandages are typically worn for 3–7 days, and drains are removed after 1–2 days. Within approximately 2–3 months, the face fully settles, resulting in a younger, tighter, and more defined neck contour.
When performed with the right technique, neck lift results can last for many years. However, aging continues, and slight sagging may gradually reoccur. Smoking, prolonged sun exposure, and weight fluctuations can negatively impact the longevity of results.
