Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty)
Over time, signs of aging such as sagging, puffiness, and wrinkles can appear on the eyelids. Sagging upper lids can give a tired, aged appearance and, in some cases, can also limit vision. Aesthetic problems such as puffiness and sagging can develop in the lower lids. These changes are caused by a combination of factors such as genetics, age, facial expressions, lack of sleep, smoking, and sun exposure.
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to correct these problems. Excess skin and muscle tissue are removed from the upper eyelid, while fat tissue causing bags in the lower eyelid is reshaped or removed. If necessary, fat injections can also be performed under the eye, providing both aesthetic and functional improvement.
The surgery is performed under local or general anesthesia and usually takes 30–60 minutes. Upper and lower eyelid procedures can be combined in a single session. Mild swelling and bruising are normal for the first few days after the procedure; cold compresses will help alleviate this. Stitches are removed approximately one week later. Patients can usually return to their daily routines within 5–7 days. Because the scars are hidden in the eyelid creases, they fade over time. The effects of the procedure last for an average of 10–15 years. However, because the aging process cannot be stopped, further intervention may be necessary in later years.
