Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction is a surgical procedure that reconstructs lost breast tissue following breast removal due to breast cancer. The goal is to reshape the breast as closely as possible to its natural appearance. This procedure improves both physical appearance and promotes mental well-being.
Breast reconstruction can be performed in the same session as the mastectomy, or it can be performed later, after the treatment process is complete. The technique used is determined by many factors, including the patient's general health, previous treatments, body type, and the size of the other breast.
The most common methods include the use of silicone implants, tissue transfer from the patient's own tissue (from the abdomen, back, or buttocks), and a combination of these two techniques. In some cases, the nipple and areola (the dark circle around the nipple) can also be reconstructed through surgery or tattooing.
This surgery, performed under general anesthesia, can take 3 to 8 hours, depending on the technique used. Patients typically stay in the hospital for 1–5 days. During recovery, wearing a sports bra, adhering to physical restrictions for a period of time, and regular checkups with a doctor are recommended.
Breast reconstruction not only provides an improvement in appearance, but also increases self-confidence, restores a sense of body integrity, and helps prevent physical problems such as posture problems that may occur due to breast loss.
